Shaping the Sound of Fairies

Lecture Recital and Thesis

“Shaping the Sound of Fairies: Defining Soprano Depictions of the 19th-century Fairy Topic from an Interdisciplinary Perspective” is a multimodal thesis project completed in coordination with Nazareth University’s School of Music and Honors Department. In this research, Crystalina Baumer defines the “fairy style,” a popular musical topic in 19th-century Western classical music, at an all-encompassing level. By combining musical analysis, vocal pedagogy, gender studies, and a view of the simultaneous literary trends, Baumer illuminates the musical features of the fairy topic and the connotations that arise when the topic becomes assigned to the soprano voice type in opera and art song. The culmination of this work is meant to further topic theory while informing vocalists how to perform and combat gender stereotypes present in fairy characters. Baumer’s project will be presented in the form of a lecture recital as partial fulfillment of her Bachelor of Arts in Music and Honors Program distinction.

Sunday, November 8th at 3pm in Wilmot Recital Hall
